Safe Building 101: Creating a Climate-Controlled Space In Your Home

As I started to increase my art collection, I wanted to make sure that my investment was protected. I wasn't sure exactly how to store it all when it wasn't on display, but I knew I needed to do something. I decided to talk with a local construction contractor about how to secure my art, and he suggested a climate-controlled secure room in my home. They built a vault-like space in the house that is perfect for long-term storage. I created this site to showcase what was done in the hopes that others may seek the same solution. I hope the information here helps you to secure your financial investment as well.

4 Cool Features To Take Your Custom Home To The Next Level

If you're having a custom home built, then there's no reason to stick to classic, mundane design options! Get creative! Include some features that speak to your specific needs and that will make your life easier, or more enjoyable, on a daily basis. If you're not sure where to start, here are four cool features that can take your custom home to the next level.

Under-Stair Storage

The area beneath a staircase is often wasted. Here's a good way to change that: have storage drawers built into the space. The stairs can grow from small to large as you move up the stairway. Have them made from natural wood with a rich, natural finish for beauty. You can use these drawers to store things that you don't use every day, like your sleeping bags, holiday decor, and out-of-season clothing. The items will be out of the way, but also easy to access.

A Hidden Room

Your kids will love this one. What child does not dream of discovering a hidden room in their home or having a club house in a space others can't find? A good way to hide a room is to put it behind a set of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The bookshelves can open like a door when you push a certain button. The hidden room would be a perfect playroom since your kids can create a mess back there, and then you can just close the bookshelves to hide the mess before someone comes over.

A Mudroom/Bathroom

You may want to create a separate entrance into your home that opens up into a mudroom/bathroom. This works really well for people with hobbies that leave the messy, like hunting or horseback riding. You can clean up in the mudroom before entering the rest of the home. Include a washer and dryer, shower, and sink in the mudroom so a dirty person can clean themselves and their apparel in this space.

A Central Vacuum

Having to lug the vacuum up and down stairs is no fun. Have your builder include a central vacuum in your home design. Like an HVAC system, this vacuum system will include some ducts within the walls, along with a storage container where all the dust accumulates as you suck it up. You can have multiple nozzles placed throughout the home so you never have to pull the vacuum very far.

With the features above, you can take your custom home building project to the next level.
